Tips For Training A Puppy: What New Pet Owners Should Keep In Mind

When you’ve just brought home a new puppy, it’s likely that training your new pet is the furthest thing from your mind. After all, you have other things to worry about, like treats, accessories, and capturing pictures of your adorable young pooch.

However, training is something that you won’t want to put off. A well-trained puppy won’t just make your life easier; it’ll make your puppy’s life easier. A lack of clear rules and boundaries can be stressful for a young dog. When you provide your puppy with the proper training, they’ll be able to relax and enjoy life.

Training can’t be put off, but that doesn’t mean it has to be complicated. If you follow these tips for training a puppy, you’ll have a well-behaved and happy dog.

Teaching Your Dog to Sit

One of the first commands you should teach your dog is the “sit” command. It’s a simple command for a dog to learn, and it will help you to manage your puppy while they’re still learning self control.

To teach your puppy this skill, crouch down next to your puppy, or sit in a chair so that you’re closer to their level. Take a puppy treat and hold it up towards their nose. Move the hand holding the treat upwards, allowing your puppy’s head to follow the treat.

As your puppy’s head moves up, their bottom will naturally move towards the ground. When their bottom hits the floor, give them the treat and praise them for their actions. Use the word “sit” so that the dog will learn to associate the behaviour with the command.

Teaching Your Dog to Come

Once your puppy is comfortable with sit command, you’ll want to move on to teach your dog to come when you call them. This command can be particularly helpful when you’re trying to prevent your puppy from engaging in troublesome behaviours.

If your dog escapes from your yard, you can get them to return to them by calling out the come command. If your dog is walking towards the trash, you can distract them by asking them to come to you.

To teach your puppy this command, attach a light line to their collar. Allow your pet to drag the line around for a minute. After your puppy has adjusted to the weight of the line, pick it up and hold it. Follow the puppy around the yard like you would if you were taking them on a walk.

Eventually, your puppy will turn around and start to walk toward you. When they do this, praise them and give them a treat. Begin to pair this with the word come, and they’ll eventually associate that word with the behaviour.

The key to teaching your puppy a command is repetition. However, repeating a command too frequently will cause your puppy to become tired of it. Instead, try to enforce the command in natural situations. For example, you can have your dog practice the sit command during mealtimes.

If you follow these tips for training a puppy, you’ll see positive changes in your dog’s behaviour. Soon, you’ll be able to move on to more complex commands, and you’ll have a healthy and well-adjusted puppy on your hands.
